Ep 404 – Remembering Iran-Contra

The announcement that the next President of the NRA brings back old memories of Oliver North and Iran-Contra. For some curious reason, Iran-Contra is largely untaught to younger Americans, and most folks in the older generation have largely forgotten about exactly what transpired in the 1980s.

In an effort to circumvent Congress, the the CIA, Department of Defense, and others within the Reagan administration secretly sold missiles to Iran in exchange for hostages. Then, instead of sending the profits from the trade back to America, more than half of the money to given to the Contras in Nicaragua. Both the sale of weapons to Iran as well as the funding of the Contras were completely illegal, but no one faced any real consequences.

The story is an interesting one, and doesn’t stop with the Reagan administration. During the same time, Bill Clinton was Governor of Arkansas where the CIA set up an airbase that was home to Barry Seal, a man who flew back and forth to Central America, exchanging weapons and money for thousands of pounds of cocaine which eventually made its way onto the streets of America (with the approval of the Drug Enforcement Agency).

History tells us a lot about what is going on today. If we are to believe Reagan (who claimed ignorance) and believe Clinton (who also claimed ignorance) then we unfortunately come to the conclusion that even the most powerful figures in politics don’t actually know what is REALLY going on. Think the newest administration is different? Don’t be naive!
