College Bans American Flag

What’s the proper reaction to students ripping down the American flag and burning it a day before Veterans Day? Ban the American flag, of course!

It may sound ridiculous but that is exactly what happened at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. While acknowledging that the burning was disrespectful to veteran students, Hampshire College President Jonathan Lash saw some good in removing all flags from the campus completely.

According to Lash, banning the American flag will “enable us to instead focus our efforts on addressing racist, misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and behaviors.”

Instead of focusing on the burning of the American flag, a symbol of not only America’s history, the lives that have been given to protect it, and the ideals that the country was founded upon – those of liberty, justice, and equality under the law – we need to focus on racism.

Never mind the fact that America is the only country where hundreds of thousands of soldiers fought and died to end slavery. Never mind the fact that women, minorities, and members of the LGBTQ community are treated better in America than anywhere else in the world. Never mind the fact that at America’s core is a country that welcomes immigrants from around the world with open arms.

Should Lash, Hampshire College, or any liberal wish to address issues of racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other prejudice, they should read a bit about American history and study how our country has made greater strides in shorter time towards civil rights, justice, and equality than any other nation in human history.
