France’s interior minister, Gérard Collomb, said during a news conference that the latest Paris attacker shouted “This is for Syria“. He did so as he assaulted a police officer with a hammer, before being shot, injured, and taken into custody. The incident happened around 5:00 outside the Notre Dame cathedral Tuesday afternoon.
Onlookers were immediately rushed inside the cathedral, which was then put on lock-down. In addition to a hammer, the attacker was also armed with a number of kitchen knives. The officer who was the victim of the attack is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
The attack comes just 3 days after the London bridge attack in which a van crashed into civilians. Three men then got out of the van and began attacking people before being shot by London police.
France is currently in a state of emergency, and has been since the Charlie Hebdo attack in 2015. Since 2015, 240 people have been killed in France at the hands of terrorists in various attacks.
