Reuters has given us the blessing of live tv without commentary. Just log into your Reuters app with Roku or Apple TV or go to Reuters’ website, and you can watch what is happening in America in real time. Gotta love it! Or maybe not.
Since Donald Trump became president, and even before he was sworn in, protestors have been gathering around the capital building in Washington DC. On the day of Trump’s inauguration, millions around the world marched against his “hate”. That weekend, millions of women marched against his “sexism”. The most recent of the protests has the theme of racism, bigotry, and Trump’s apparent “anti-immigration” stance.
While watching the live footage, viewers are treated to listening to a variety of chants. One of the more popular ones is “Hey hey ho ho, Donald Trump has got to go”. Pretty meaningless. If he has to go, we can work on that in about four years. For the time being, Trump is president, and although many people disagree with what he’s been doing so far, he hasn’t done anything worthy of impeachment.
Another popular slogan thrown around at these rallies is “Love, not hate. That’s what makes America great.” Again, its utterly meaningless, if not just flat out wrong. Love is present in all countries, so if America is great, it isn’t because of “love”. Japan has love, China has love, Australia has love. Love seems to be pretty universal, so it can’t be love that is the one factor that makes America great.
One chant that seems to be shouted at all variety of anti-Trump protests is the most confusing – “This is what democracy looks like.” What is what democracy looks like? Idiots clammoring around in the streets, banging on drums, wasting time, doing nothing productive, freely showing ignorance about the specifics of the policies Trump puts forward? If that’s democracy, count me out!
If that’s what democracy looks like, then it simply says that those who are loudest and make the biggest stink about things, get their way. Democracy isn’t about voting, it’s about wandering around the streets, killing time, and carrying signs that offer little insight into any qualms one may have with the Trump administration.
Democracy looks like hoards of unwashed, unfashionable, bearded, smelly, sheeple, mindlessly droning on with slogans like “Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here.” Well, if that’s what democracy looks like, then thank God that America isn’t, nor has it ever been, a democracy. America is a constitutional republic, with rules clearly set up for how government works, how voting works, and the restrictions and limits on government’s power. Thank God we don’t live in a democracy.
