The revelations about the FBI infiltrating the 2016 Trump campaign leads us to one simple conclusion – we still have COINTELPRO today! COINTELPRO was a secret FBI program ran during the 1960s that worked to infiltrate, surveil, and disrupt various political movements at the time. Although the program was “officially” ended in 1971, there are signs that the program has reemerged in modern times.
When looking at stories today, we can connect the dots back in not too distant memory. The FBI is using national security letters in order to bypass judicial oversight. The Patriot Act enables the FBI to more or less, sign their own warrants if their investigation pertains to national security, but since that power has been given to the FBI, it has been wildly abused. There is no judicial check on executive power.
This is a powerful moment and we should all think about this. In order to “keep us safe”, Congress granted the executive branch more power. The bill, signed by President George W Bush was later used as a tool by the opposition party to target a Presidential candidate, and even an acting President. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
8 signs pointing to a counterintelligence operation deployed against Trump’s campaign
