Julian Assange, founder and editor of Wikileaks, responded to CIA Director Mike Pompeo through a piece he wrote for the Washington Post. Assange isn’t one to stand down. He isn’t a man who is afraid to fight. Considering that he sacrificed his relationships with his friends and family, and his own freedom; that should be evident.
Assange wrote about the enormous hypocrisy of Pompeo’s argument. During run-up to the 2016 election, Pompeo tweeted support for Wikileaks. Now that he is CIA Director, he’s suddenly against them.
“Pompeo was once a WikiLeaks fan. On July 24, then partisan politician Pompeo gloatingly tweeted: “Need further proof that the fix was in from Pres. Obama on down? BUSTED: 19,252 Emails from DNC Leaked by WikiLeaks.” Pompeo liked WikiLeaks when he perceived it was publishing material revealing the shortcomings of his political rivals. It was only when our publications touched Pompeo’s rice bowl that WikiLeaks became his target.”
National Security is Political
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Mike Pompeo is highly critical of Wikileaks when it shows the incompetence of his own department. Pompeo is a politician. The head of the Justice Department, Jeff Sessions, is a career politician. These men were appointed by Donald Trump, a politician. We live in a time when national security is political.
Julian Assange and Wikileaks present a political threat to the Trump administration. They threaten to expose the government as incompetent, and unconstitutional. Unwarranted surveillance of the general American public is what the State thrives on. It is exposed thanks to whistle blowers and Wikileaks.
We live in a time when power is increasingly dispersed. The internet has given power to anyone with an internet connection. The government is like a dinosaur, attempting to live in a world no longer fit for it. Government survives because it can rule over people, but in the age of technology, government is failing. It might still be able to protect citizens from certain threats, but it can no longer keep secrets.
