President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet continues to be filled in, and as with many other spots, the Secretary of Transportation position will be filled with a Washington insider.
Trump has chosen Elaine Chao for the job. Chao worked under George W. Bush as Labor Secretary from 2001-2009. She also has experience in George H.W. Bush’s administration as the Deputy Secretary of Transportation, as well as working in the Department during the Reagan years.
Prior to working in government, Chao worked for both Bank of America and Citigroup. In the years between H.W. Bush and W. Bush, she worked on behalf of United Way and the Heritage Foundation. Post-W. Bush Chao resided on the corporate boards of News Corp, Dole Food Company, and Wells Fargo.
In 1993 Chao married Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who currently serves as the most powerful Republican in the U.S. Senate. The two have no children together (although McConnell has three children from a previous marriage).
