White Nationalists Protest Removal of Statue

White nationalists, led by controversial author and speaker Richard Spencer, marched and protested the removal of a statue of General Robert E Lee. The statue is located in Charlottesville Virginia, and is a key component of an upcoming governor’s race. Those marching carried torches and chanted “You will not replace us”.

Also thrown in were chants of “Russia is our friend”. Just in case the pro-Trump alt-right hadn’t scared away anyone on the fence – take a look at some of the snapshots from over the weekend.

To rally the group behind him, Spencer told his followers and the media onlookers, “What brings us together is that we are white, we are a people, we will not be replaced.”

The scene has drawn some very negative reactions. While some understand the historical significance of the statue itself, the protests are bringing back bad memories for others. Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer said,

“This event involving torches at night in Lee Park was either profoundly ignorant or was designed to instill fear in our minority populations in a way that hearkens back to the days of the KKK.”

The protests certainly created a frenzy of negative media coverage of some of Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters. Due to an injunction the removal of the statue has been halted for another six months. Depending on further court proceedings, it could still be removed.
